TOP TIP
A functional resume or CV is getting more common in Singapore. In this format you group your activities/skills thematically. It allows you to emphasis certain skills and experiences (and gaps in your resume are less obvious).
General Outline
Instead of Curriculum Vitae or CV, the term “Resume” is used in Singapore. General length should not exceed 1-2 pages and should have clear and easy to read layout. Make sure your resume is tailored for a specific job position and you are able to demonstrate relevant skills and experiences required by the employer.
Picture
It is important to keep the nationality of your prospective employer in mind, as it determines whether you should or shouldn’t include a picture on your resume. Generally, Singaporean employers prefer to see a picture on candidate’s CV, make sure it is a professional-looking photo.
Personal Details
Include your contact details as well as nationality and place of birth, but omit your religion.
Summary
The career summary is providing a recruiter with a quick overview of your profile. Make sure you highlight your strengths. The summary should be your ‘sales pitch’! Use power words (achieved, performed, managed, etc.) where possible.
Education and Qualifications
Use reverse chronological order to list previous educational institutions, including dates of attendance, locations, major/specialization/minor courses if applicable. Note: for fresh graduates with limited work/internship experience, it is advisable to mention attended courses that are relevant for the job. The less experience one has, the more weight the employer will put on educational qualifications.
Work Experience
Use reverse chronological order to list you previous work experience, including dates, company names, locations, positions that you held and key responsibilities learned. It is advisable to use keywords as were specified in a job advertisement to highlight your relevance for a specific position.
