TOP TIP

Do note that your professional summary description, particularly if you send your CV or resume in digital format, needs to use key action verbs as nouns. HR software designed to scan CVs is more capable to detect nouns, therefore increasing the chance that your CV will not be discarded because of “lack of hits”. This is your chance to sell yourself!

CV or Resume

Both terms are commonly used in New Zealand. The is quite different from traditional formats used in Europe and even United Kingdom. While similar rules apply (length should not exceed 2-3 pages), New Zealand recruiters place larger emphasis on the skills of the applicant. The order, style and layout in which you present the content is up to the candidate; however headings should be clearly defined to distinguish different sections.

Photo

A photograph is not included as this straight away provides certain information on the candidate (gender, race, age) that could be considered a ground for discrimination and as such needs to be avoided.

Professional Summary

Make sure your professional summary identifies your core competencies and skills in such a way that grabs the attention of the recruiter. The best way of doing that is to include examples of how you have successfully used particular skills and mention tangible results achieved with it. Use action verbs to describe yourself and your skills.

Work Experience

Use reverse chronological order when listing previous jobs. Include name of the company, period of employment, position(s) held and main responsibilities and achievement in those roles.

Professional Skills

It is important for a New Zealand recruiter to see not just a list of your skills and professional achievements, but also view concrete examples of those skills put to practice. Make sure that you have good examples on your CV that match the desired skills for the job you are applying for.

Education

Use reverse chronological order for Education sections of your CV. Mention the dates of attendance, diplomas, majors and additional courses you have completed.

Grades

If your educational background differs from the New Zealand standard, i.e. grading system and GPA calculation, it is advisable to match it with the New Zealand system and state the equivalent on your CV.
